A Northern Light in Provence
Author: Elizabeth Birkelund
In New Zealand, is wintertime. So whilst I have been watching the Paris Olympics and people wearing summer clothing and having a good time, I am rugged up against the chill and hanging in there for the promise of springtime.
But my level of cold is nothing compared to the winters in Greenland. Yes, Greenland, where our novel starts. Ilse is a translator specialising in English, Danish and French translations.
In the first of three distinct parts of the novel we live with Isle, dressed in multiple layers, as she hides away from the world, at the end of the world, working remotely in physical and emotional isolation.

Mastering the Art of French Murder
Author: Colleen Cambridge
I never fail to be impressed at an authors creativity.
In this novel, Colleen Cambridge positions her heroine as a neighbor of Julia and Paul Childs living in Paris in 1949.
Tabitha Knight is a poor cook and enthusiastic to learn all she can from her talented neighbor Julia of ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’ fame. Après a party in the Childs apartment block where a young woman is murdered (using one of Julias favourite cooking knives no less!) and Tab and Julia are on the trail.
Between visits to the markets to stock up on the ingredients to make a perfect mayonnaise (Julia), visits to the theatre where the young lady worked (Tab), disastrous cooking experiences trying to make dinner for her uncles (Tab) and a rather good looking young French detective, the story rattles along.

The Fleur de Sel Murders
Author: Jean-Luc Bannalec

Salt and murder are in the air!
I am a bit of a latecomer to this author who already has several books to his credit set in Brittany. As a first-time visitor to Normandie in 2023, I wish I had more time to venture into the land of ancient folk law, steeped in history. The one I have just read, took me there in my mind with evocative detail and full use of the descriptions to the senses.
Our hero Commissaire Georges Dupin has been working in Brittany for nearly five years but is only just touching the surface in his understanding of this unique part of France. An innocent trip to the Guérande Peninsula to see the salt marshes finds Dupin diving for cover amongst the salt catchment ponds to escape gun shots and then being locked inside a shed.
Angélique
Amazon refers to Angélique as the ‘No 1 International Thriller Sensation’… that feels like enough adjectives to describe this book.
I am a newcomer to French author Guillaume Musso’s works, and I can see that he has quite the selection of novels. That experience has helped craft his writing skills and that shows itself in Angélique.
Set in current times (although there is a bit of ‘five months previously’ type chapters), its fast paced, with characters full of believable human behaviours and cracks along in a twisty turny story that is a little far fetched but also possible.

A Breath of French Air – Pop Larkin
H.E. Bates
Perfick!! The Larkins in France
“I should like to go to France,” Ma said. “God Almighty,” Pop said. ‘What for?”.
This was an unexpected little pleasure. For any of you that are familiar with the Larkins and their brood of children, you are probably smiling already imagining Ma and Pa being around the ‘Frenchie’s’, what with them being ‘très snobs’…
Written in 1959, the Larkin stories speak of a time of Rule Britannia, hearty eating, country living and all that was England. The golden years after the war.
If you are unfamiliar with the books, this might not be your cup of tea (“And tell him we want a cup o’ tea,’ Ma said.).
